Overview

There is more to Barcelona than tapas & sangria. Although those are both delicious! Let me take you to one of my favorite cities. You will enjoy learning about the Catalan culture, visiting the majestic monastery of Montserrat, the Penedes region-home to Cava sparkling wine, mesmerizing Gaudi architecture before heading off to the warm Mediterranean Coast. In Costa Brava we will travel back in time in the medieval town of Girona, visit the Salvador Dali museum-one of Spain’s most brilliant artists-and sail & swim along the coast while enjoying show-cooking. In the evening, we’ll all meet up in the lobby at 7pm. It’s time to dive in! We’ll head to a fantastic neighborhood bistro offering a vast selection of great wine paired with excellent Mediterranean cuisine. This will give us all a chance to get to know each other, and your fantastic local host and guide for your Catalan culinary adventure.

12:00 – 4 hours

Meet your guide at your hotel. This afternoon food and wine tour is all about decoding Barcelona using its great bars and restaurants. We’ll learn about Barcelona’s gastronomy, history and a strong cultural identity while we eat and drink our way around its small charming streets and soak it in firsthand. We’ll lead you through various neighborhoods of Barcelona with a local expert and learn all about the colorful history and cultural nuances of Barcelona and the region of Catalonia. From Roman conquests, wine tasting techniques, local dining culture, to the societal impact of the modern Catalan separatist movement, we’ll get into it all! We’ll visit local establishments for tasty gourmet dishes and a wide variety of wines from around Spain and Catalonia. Wine connoisseurs and foodies, as well as those who simply enjoy eating and drinking, are assured a fantastic time, with loads of information from an English-speaking, personable guide about wine, food, culture and the history of the city and region. This is a walking tour with about 10-15 minutes between each of the destination restaurants. We exclusively include great local establishments, keeping the experience unique, fun, and memorable.

We recommend comfortable walking shoes for this tour!

Your guide, an expert in Catalan history and culture, will pick you up at your hotel to begin our day. We’ll head to Montserrat mountain, rising up over the Penedes, a place of great importance in Catalan culture. There you’ll get to know the history behind the beautiful Benedictine abbey and have a private tour of the inside, learning about all the artistic and historical nuances to be discovered at every corner. We’ll then take in the natural beauty and head for a scenic natural walk along the trail. On the return, you will avoid the steep way up by taking the funicular the last stretch of the way! You’ll also have the chance to buy some local cheese, honey, or delicious sweets made by the monastery.

After we’ve taken in the beautiful scenery, we’ll drive to a quaint restaurant to stop for a traditional Catalan lunch. With full bellies, we’ll drive south to D.O. Penedes, an important wine appellation close by. Here we will enjoy a private visit at a boutique vineyard that focuses on high quality Cava and is one of the best producers in the area. You will learn all about the great wines of this region and get to know the processes that go into the winemaking from vine to glass. We’ll do a quick field visit to see the grapes and then will get to taste a selection of some of our favorite wines accompanied by some light snacks. At the end of the visit around 5:30pm, we’ll begin the drive back to Barcelona.

10:00 – 4 hours

Meet your guide in your hotel lobby. This half day tour of Barcelona is all about getting to know the city and seeing the main highlights. We’ll begin with an incredible guide, who is equal parts charming and knowledgeable. The tour is a great blend of the top sights with some off-the-beaten-path spots as well and will include the Barcelona sites that are most interesting to you. Your guide will take you inside the Sagrada Familia (without towers) for a private tour, as well as show you the Gothic Quarter and Cathedral, Casa Mila (exterior), Casa Batllo (exterior), The Montjuic Castle, park and viewpoint of the city, The Olympic facilities (a short exterior stop), The National Palace and Plaza Espanya, and Las Ramblas. During the tour, you can enjoy a brief historical walking tour through the Gothic and Born neighborhoods to visit some of the locations that cannot be explored by vehicle, inclusive of Plaza Reial, Plaza Sant Jaume, Plaza del Rei, the Church of Santa Maria del Mar, and more, time permitting. With so much to see, your guide will work with you to prioritize the locations you are most interested in visiting to make the most of your time on the tour. This tour includes transportation, entrances to the Sagrada Familia, pick-up from your accommodation and an extremely knowledgeable and personable guide. We can adjust the amount of time walking vs. the amount of time spent driving as you wish.

Fancy Dinner (tbd)

Let’s all great dressed up and head out for a fantastic gourmet meal for our last night in Barcelona!

Check out of Hotel Pulitzer Medieval Girona & Dalí Museum On this full day trip, we’ll explore the city of Girona, which is a very well-preserved medieval town of about 90,000 people that has a stunningly beautiful old quarter, with a rich Jewish, Medieval and Roman heritage. It is full of tiny, winding cobblestone streets, pedestrian bridges, colorful houses and buildings lining the Onyar River, great shops, charming cafes and restaurants, an incredible Cathedral, Arab Baths and much more. We’ll take a stroll along the top of the ancient Roman wall that still surrounds part of the town, as well as wander through the peaceful gardens inside the towers at either end. After a great lunch at one of our favorite restaurants and an interesting tour of the old quarter, we’ll head to the town of Figueres to see the Salvador Dalí Museum. The Theatre-Museum is the largest surrealistic object in the world, located in the former Municipal Theatre. After exploring this eccentric and interesting space, we’ll start our journey to the hotel. Entrance fees to museums are included. Dalí Museum Note: Your guide will not accompany you inside the museum, and there are no audio guides available. The reason that there are no audio guides is that Dalí said that there are two kinds of visitors: those who don’t need a description, and those who aren’t worth a description. His museum, his rules! Your guide will, however, fully prepare you for the visit, giving great insight into what to look out for and the best “approach to the museum”.

Your driver for the day will meet you at your hotel at 11am and drive you 25min away to the port of Palamós where you will meet your hosts, Jaume and Clara. Both are local experts and passionate about the Costa Brava and it’s fantastic food! We’ll head out to sea on a refurbish traditional wooden fishing yacht. We’ll take in the sun, discover secret coves, swim, and then eat a delicious lunch on board. We’ll taste anchovies, paella, suquet, or some of the famous shrimp from Palamós with great wines from D.O. Empordà while anchored in front of a unique rocky Costa Brava beach.

Jaume will do some show-cooking for you all, while Clara (who happens to also be a sommelier) will share all about the wines. Meanwhile you can jump in and out of the water and play around in the amazing Mediterranean setting.

Enjoy unmatched surroundings and discover the most exclusive corners of the finest part of the Costa Brava. We will sail alongside the coast and enjoy the serenity and crystal blue color of the Mediterranean Sea.

Once you get out to sea, the Mediterranean starts to shine and invites you to jump in and have a swim. On board, the ship has a refrigerator stocked with snacks and drinks which are at your disposal for the whole day. You will be back to shore around 3pm and then be meet by your driver again and taken back to the hotel.

Final Group Dinner
After a rest we’ll reconvene as a group to have a fantastic gourmet dinner together to celebrate our last night.
